Tipping

Tipping customs in Africa are fairly inconsistent. In the north, service charges are often automatic, and tipping modest. In Kenya for example, people in the service industry are not accustomed to lavish tipping however in South Africa, American-style tipping is in practice as service workers earn relatively low wages.  It is a good idea to observe the locals, try to get someone in the know to assess the situation, and pay attention to hints dropped by service staff.
